Technology in Dog Training

Technology is all around us. We use smartphones, tablets, automated systems, laptops, desktops...Why not use it in dog training?

It turns out there are several products out there that can be very useful in dog training. This is especially true when we need to train from a distance. For example, we want to teach a dog a "down/stay" when were are 15 yards away from him/her. Moreover, perhaps we would like to train the dog when we are actually not in sight.

For these purposes we have remote treat dispensing technologies that allow us to deliver treats at the exact right moment with a click of a button. With some of those technologies we can actually see the dog remotely (on a smartphone app for example) and deliver the treats based on what we see.

While some of those systems can be quite expensive, they can end up saving money in the long run.

It would be more expensive to buy a new couch because the dog chewed on it than to spend $100-200 on such technologies.

Importantly, the ability to give treats to your dogs from afar can be highly valuable when trying to treat separation anxiety. These technologies can be a part of a well designed behavior modification plan and can shorten the duration needed to treat separation anxiety.

So here are two products that you might find useful - I sure like them:

  1. PetSafe Treat & Train Remote Dog Trainer - This is a relatively cheap (~$110 on Amazon) and simple device. It allows you to feed on schedules and to feed remotely from 100 feet away. However, it doesn't allow you to see the dog on your smartphone. You could, however, buy a simple wireless cam and use it. While a bit cumbersome, it will work.

  2. Petzi Treat Cam - This cool product will allow you to see your dog on a smartphone, treat remotely based on what you see, talk to the dog, and take pictures of your dog. It is a bit more expensive (~$169 on Amazon) Here's a link to a YouTube video.

So whether you want to train your dog from afar, or whether you need to get your dog used to being alone, these products can help. It is important to note, however, that these products cannot replace a well-designed behavior modification program. These products should be implemented into such behavior modification programs and not replace them.

And, well, they can also be fun for you and for your dog. So if you have the money to spare...why not? Spoil your dog (and yourself) and have fun training and teaching your dog.
